Preparing for the New School Year

In addition to the assigned grade, the notes in your child’s report card hold a treasure trove of information which you can use over the summer break. The Tutoring Center, Dubai has prepared a great post on the subject, below.

What’s the Theme?

Sit down with your student, a snack, and their report card, and read through each of the teacher’s notes carefully to identify a common theme. As an example, if your student struggled to present their work to the class, then you would expect to see multiple notes on the topic. Keeping with this example, these are some great summer ideas:
  • Copy paragraphs of text from a range of reading material and use them as part of a reward system, where reading a passage aloud to your family is rewarded with a trip to the mall, etc.
  • Reading your mail to you while you prepare dinner is a great way for children to practice public speaking and for parents to track their progress and identify particular struggles areas.
  • Encourage your child to read non-educational books such as fictional stories and even comic books, reading aloud the first and last page of each chapter, to expand their lexicon.
If your child struggles with a different skill, adapt these tips or consider your own ways to introduce small learning instances into their day.
